Call it pottery or call it ceramics, we call it a workout.

Ceramics (or pottery as some refer to it) is possibly the best expression of the term functional art. It is an accessible art form that can be put into practice nightly on your dinner table, embodying the spirit of the artist who crafted it and bringing that energy into your home, restaurant, hotel, or cafe. It is also one of the most deceptively challenging functional crafts.

When we first began this journey over five years ago when The Co-Op Baja opened, ceramics was a natural component…Mexico is renowned for its craftsmanship of this legacy art form. We, like so many, love to collect ceramics during our travels as keepsakes; so it has been a joy to discover that the art of pottery can extend to cover not only your ENTIRE dining table, but also be used in wall hangings, lighting and decor.

And like so many, I wanted to learn more about the craft and thought, “it looks pretty easy, perhaps I can make my own collection”! And so I enrolled in a local class determined to discover that I was an inherent ceramicist.

Turns out, the artisans we work with are so beyond talented that they make pottery appear like an afternoon craft…and not the full body workout and painstakingly-detailed manipulation of a material that feels like it has a mind of its own while in your hands. I signed up for 6 classes and left after just 3, donating my clay to someone more talented than I. Lesson learned…ceramics is a master craft and an art form unlike any other.
